Amongst the Chaos: An in depth and thought provoking article around the constraints we use to coach and how - for better or worse - this is shaping modern players. Positional Play, control, freedom, constraints led approach and differential learning are all explored and Jake provides some great exercise examples from this. A very good read!
Fosbury Flop - Wolfgang Schollhorn: This is one of the resources linked in the article above, and while I am yet to listen to it (I will be doing so by the end of the week) I am very familiar with the Fosbury Flop podcast. Therefore, I am confident this will be a fascinating listen for any ambitious coach. Wolfgang Schollhorn is widely cited as the pioneer of Differential Learning.

Welcome to For Coaches on The Patient Build Up. Every week you will find educational content here that you can use in your own environment. The aim of this content - be it sessions, methodology ideas or general advice - will be to provide theoretical knowledge that coaches can adapt to their own environment. I will try my best to make sure that everything that goes in this section is as objective as possible and always taking football as the starting point. In fact I encourage all who read this section to reflect on it and understand how it fits into his or her environment. In simple terms understand the abilities and inabilities of your players and adjust it accordingly. Always remember that the players should be at the forefront of what we coaches do.
This week I am sharing five types of Rondos/Positional Games, progressing from simple to complex. The five exercises all share three key individual concepts: Space occupation, angle of pass and body orientation.
1. 6v3 Rondo
ORGANISATION:
9 players, split into two teams: 6 attackers and 3 defenders.
Playing area: 12m (length) x 10m (width).
Footballs positioned around the area to allow for quick restarts.
EXPLANATION: This is a simple 6v3 rondo.
The 6 attackers (blue) aim to maintain possession of the ball against the 3 defenders (red). The objective is to play away from pressure, either by playing around, through, or away from the defending players.
The 3 defenders work together to regain possession. Once they win the ball or the ball leaves the area, play is immediately restarted with a new ball.
The defending team remains in the middle for a set period of time before rotating with 3 new players.
KEY CONCEPTS:
The player on the ball must recognise all possible connections (left, right, forward, back, and through).
Identify the type of pass required (along the ground or in the air) based on the situation.
Play passes to the foot furthest away from the nearest defender.
The direction of the first touch should help the player move away from pressure and keep as many passing options available as possible.
TIME:
6 rounds of 3 minutes, with a 1 minute rest.
Total: 24 minutes.
